Spargle introduces Kevin Zambon

Favourite Movie: ‘There’s still Tomorrow’

Favourite Book: The Eight Mountains, Paolo Cognetti

Motto: ‘The world is your oyster’

I have to constantly tell myself ‘stop thinking like a project manager!’

What is your current role?

I’m currently covering the role of audio visual engineer at Nike, this means that I’m responsible for anything audio and visual related on the Nike campus, here in Hilversum. I keep the standard for EHQ territories in zoom rooms, video conferencing rooms and digital signage. I started the role around July and it’s the first time I’ve ever done something like this, with this level of technicality also!

What would be the biggest challenges within your role?

As this role is something new to me that I’ve never done before, it’s a whole new experience and it does come with challenges. I’m loving it, it’s a different way of working and a different pace too, as I used to be a project manager before for over 10 years within retail. So I have to keep telling myself ‘stop thinking like a project manager’, so with this new role so I have a lot to catch up on.

It’s a challenge, as I’m working with people who have had years of experience and I want to be able to hold conversations with them. I am however, a very hands-on interactive person so I don’t want to go into conversations and just be silent, I like to participate, I’m very thirsty to learn.

How have you overcome those challenges, or how do you deal with them now?

It’s a lot of ‘learning on the go’, I try to keep on top of it by enrolling in courses and studying so I can keep on top of things. It’s a lot of online training too, workshops, reaching out to my peers, asking questions and shadowing them. It’s a long process but it’s getting me there!

Did you always envision yourself being in this role?

When I was younger I wanted to work in advertising! I didn’t expect myself to become a project manager or an audio visual engineer. I realised I wanted to become a project manager/audio visual engineer because I’m good at organising chaos. For example, when people are not able to communicate with one another and they loose focus, I’m good at re-aligning the project team. Or as they say ‘putting the ducks in a row!’, I tend to make sure that I’m explaining the work, mapping out everything and assigning tasks.

Which trends do you see coming in your industry or as a freelancer in 2024?

Within audio visual, the developments are continuous as we now have better televisions, displays in HD, in comparison to ten years ago. We also have 4K resolutions, we are trying to be as realistic as possible, same as sound. Look at Sonos for example, look at how easy it is to connect to their speakers and play different songs in different speakers, simply from your phone.  AI is getting really big as well. Look at Samsung as they integrated AI in their portable devices as well as home appliances and TV’s, I think it’s going to be the next biggest takeover in the foreseeable future.

It’s about deliverables, not hours. Meeting deadlines, delivering quality work, learning, adding value and havibg fun along the way are what truly matter!

What is your life’s motto?

‘The world is your oyster’. It can mean so much, life is about seizing opportunities when you have to, the bottom line is that you’re free in the world  by creating your own destiny, doing whatever you want to. This is how much this quote means to me.

Who inspired you the most?

I’ve given this question a lot of thought his name is Anthony Bourdain, he used to be a head chef for restaurants in New York, then a TV personality whilst travelling the world. What made him stand out to me as a TV host was the way he shared the stories of the people he met in his documentary. He skillfully portrayed the experiences of locals expats and immigrants, highlighting the challenges they faced in their journeys towards achieving their dreams.

Along with the daily struggles they were going through in life, he was using food as a mean to describe the societies he was visiting, whether it was good or bad. It was really beautiful for me as it showed wherever you go in the world, we all are the same, we all try to strive for a better life, be happy for ourselves and take care of our families. It was really powerful for me which is why I always refer back to him.
